Coach Billy Council led his team through some tough competition this past weekend. Rens 7th grade team took the chip at the King James Classic 2013 tournament. Forty, 7th grade travel basketball teams played in this tournament. Teams came from as far away as California, Washington, New Mexico, Texas, Florida and Canada.
New Rens walked away with a 7-0 record for the weekend. The boys played with heart and tenacity in some games that appeared to be a “Dog Fight”. New Rens definitely brought the fight with them to Akron, Ohio, as they out played Wall 2 Wall in the quarter finals 53-43. Taking it to the Metro Sixers in the Semi-Finals 59-56 and the KO came in the championship game when Chicago Select went down 47-42. Mark Twain nicely put it “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog.” You can expect the best for this team is yet to come. Coaches and players alike have accepted their marching orders onward and upward they shall go.

Coach Artie Cox’s big-time 17-year-old squad defeated two tough teams from Compton and Texas, before getting clipped by three in another contest. The 16′s won two there as well on day one. Coach CJ Council’s 15-year-old quintet won their first two face-offs in Connecticut at Basketbull’s New England Championships, with a buzzer-beating floater by Jared Rivers clinching the first battle. Closer to home at Island Garden, Coach Steve Harris’ 12U sixth grade squad playing in the national regional qualifiers lost a triple overtime thriller to the Gauchos, but then whipped Riverside decidedly. Billy Council’s 13U seventh graders defeated both opponents in the opening round of their regionals at Gauchos gym, highlighted by a crushing blow to Milbank. Coach Anne Pinto’s 5th grade quintet destroyed local teams at the Staten Island Stingrays.

On Sunday, Harris’ resilient 6th grade team ran through their regionals, wiping out New Heights 56 – 26 and then defeating Long Island’s Rising Stars 55 – 41 to clean the slate and dominate regionals.

All wish a speedy recovery to 14U’s Jose Alvarado who underwent knee surgery last Wednesday.

Coach Steve Harris’ tough-minded 6th grade quintet proved their mettle last weekend, capturing the championship in the Playaz Spring Fling Tournament in Paterson, New Jersey, whipping the Westchester Gauchos 44 – 30 after clobbering New Heights in the semis. Later that Sunday, the Rens traveled to the Bronx to win the Riverside tournament, clipping SCAN by nine, after overcoming a three-point half time deficit, and then beating New Heights in the chip for the second time in just a few hours. Congrats to Rens Assistant Coach Hector Almodovar (who managed to make it to New Jersey) and his wife Corinthia on the birth of eight pound six ounce Carmelo Anthony Almodovar born late Thursday night to thrilled older brothers Hector and Amare. Coach Billy Council’s veteran 13U 7th grade team made it all the way to the finals of the Playaz tourney before bowing to the host squad in the chip.

Speaking of Carmelo, the Rens super 14U team was the special guests of NY Knicks management last night at the team’s regular season finale against the Hawks. Close friends of the Rens, Knicks honchos provided two adjoining suites for 24 players and parents.

Both the 7th and 8th grade squads are gearing up to travel to Cleveland next weekend to compete in the King James Shooting Stars Classic.

Later in the week, they bested a veteran King Street Kings team by 15 before falling to the hometown Playaz. Coach Artie Cox’s 17U quintet is also off to a great start.

Weekend Notes:

Coach Steve Harris’ 6th graders destroyed the once-prestigious Gauchos 56 – 35 in the Riverside League in the Bronx.

The 14U Rens, helmed by Dan Klores, and winners of 36 of their last 37 contests, dominated the AAU District Qualifiers at Island Garden to decidedly qualify for the D1 Nationals to be held in Orlando in mid-July. On Saturday, the Rens defeated a feisty Black Mambas team in overtime as well as New Heights Westchester and the Riverside Hawks. On Sunday, they bested the Brooklyn Badgers by 16 and whipped Milbank 91 – 78. On Monday night, the Rens 14U team made it to the finals of the JV Division of the Island Garden Super League, beating the Mambas by 14. This was an especially huge victory for Assistant Coach Hector Almodovar who led the squad one to two years younger than the opposition.

Other Notes:

SAT prep tutoring classes will begin shortly spearheaded by the faculty of St. Francis College in Brooklyn.

Rens first gala dinner to be held October 9th in Manhattan.

Adidas team gear and shoes to arrive soon.

The 8th grade Rens captured the chip over the weekend in the 9th grade division at Ramapo College’s Bball Shootout March Madness tournament. Trouncing all three opponents in their now trademark “take no prisoners” style, the Rens defeated the Kingston Komets 77 – 44 in the finals, marking the team’s eighth victory in a row, 30th of 31, and their sixth tournament crown out of seven since December. Assistant coach Derrick Green said, “We have a ton of work to do. The kids work hard and are fearless, but we need to be in the gym a lot more to become “real champions.”
