The gritty and defensive-minded Rens 10U team went 5-0 on its way toward capturing the championship at last weekend’s Hooperstown Jamboree in Mt.Vernon. Coaches Mike Robinson and Kyle Cuffe’s quintet ran through their pool, overwhelming three opponents by an average of 40 points. Their aggressive zone, combined with a patient, unselfish offense consistently led to fast break points and second shots. Wings C.J. Stephens and Ethan Yablon were knocking down shots, while combo guards Mike Descilien and Luke Klores controlled the pace of the game and constantly attacked the middle. In the semifinals, the Rens upset the highly-touted Riverside Church team, fighting back from a six point deficit with eight minutes to go. O’zhell Jackson Kyle Cuffe, Jr. and Jordan Robinson rebounded so well that the much-bigger Hawks were unable to get many second shots. Griffin Frankel and Tyron Burgess II played super defense, and each hit a big shot in the tense affair. In the chip, the Rens also came from behind to beat a much-bigger Gauchos team 45-43. It was a huge weekend for the young fourth grade group who proved to be not only resilient and tough minded, but completely giving both on and off the court.
